Carpet

The pad under a carpet is not packaging. It carries the impact of every footstep, and the carpet above it wears at the rate the cushion allows. Put an eight-pound builder's pad under a good carpet and you have bought a good carpet that will flatten like a cheap one.

Before anything new goes down, the old floor comes out and the subfloor gets looked at. We check that it is clean, dry, flat and sound, and we tell you what it needs — leveling, a repair, a moisture concern — before we start rather than after. A carpet laid over a subfloor that moves will telegraph every joint and squeak in it.

Standard furniture moving and existing-floor removal are included on most projects. What we ask is that you clear the small, fragile and valuable things and empty drawers, shelves and storage before we arrive, because those are the items that get damaged when a room is being worked in.

Seams get planned against the light and the traffic rather than wherever a roll happens to end. Transitions into hard flooring, doorways and stair nosings are fitted as part of the job, and the carpet is stretched properly, which is the difference between a floor that stays flat and one that ripples in front of the sofa two summers from now.

We clean up, and then we walk the job with you. Installed products carry a lifetime warranty, and because we service only the jobs we installed, there is no question about whose responsibility the floor is afterwards.
