Heath is home — our address is 699 Hopewell Drive, Building 2, Unit J, so this is not a service area, it is the town we work out of. The city only became a village in 1952 and a city in 1965, and the population went from 2,426 in 1960 to 6,768 by 1970, which is why so much of the housing stock here is mid-century and why so many of the floors we lift are the second or third generation over the original subfloor. Heath is a young city built on old ground. It incorporated as a village in 1952 and became Ohio's 196th city in 1965, and the growth that made that happen was sharp: 2,426 people in 1960, 6,768 by 1970, a 179% jump in a single decade. The 2020 census counted 10,412 residents across 4,548 housing units.

That decade of growth is the single most useful thing to know about flooring here. A large share of the housing stock went up in the sixties and early seventies, which means plywood or particleboard subfloors on wood joists, original hardwood in some of the better-built houses, and in most of them a run of successive floors laid one over another rather than removed. When we lift a carpet in a house of that vintage it is common to find sheet vinyl underneath it and, under that, the original deck. That matters for two reasons: the finished floor height has usually crept up over the years, so door casings and thresholds need undercutting, and the deck below has rarely been inspected since it was built.

Sixty-year-old joists and subfloor panels are not a problem in themselves. They are a reason to check for movement before anything goes down. Loose panels squeak, and a squeak becomes unreachable the moment a finished floor covers it, so screwing the deck down properly is a five-minute job at the right moment and an impossible one an hour later.

The median age here is 43.3 and the vacancy rate is low at 4.7%, which shows up in the kind of work we get asked for. It is mostly people improving a house they intend to stay in rather than preparing one for sale, and that changes the sensible specification. When a floor has to last fifteen years rather than get through a listing, the cushion under a carpet and the preparation under a plank are worth spending on.

Much of Heath sits close to the Great Circle Earthwork and the wider Newark Earthworks complex, and the flat ground that made this a good place for an airport and a mall also makes for slab construction on the newer and commercial side of town. Slab work is a different conversation — moisture testing before anything glued or engineered goes over it, and leveling where the pour has moved.
