Luxury Vinyl Plank
Luxury vinyl plank gives you the look of a wood floor in the rooms where a wood floor would be a bad idea — kitchens, entryways, basements, anywhere with pets or a lot of traffic. We fit it over a properly prepared subfloor, because LVP is thin, and thin floors show whatever is underneath them.
Water-resistant and waterproof are not the same promise
The plank, the core and the seams
Luxury vinyl plank is a layered product, and the layer people ask about is rarely the one that decides how it performs. The wear layer on top governs how it holds up to grit and claws. The core in the middle — rigid SPC, softer WPC, or a flexible glue-down — governs how it feels underfoot, how much subfloor imperfection it hides, and how it behaves when the room's temperature swings.
Waterproof, as manufacturers use it, describes the plank. A waterproof plank will sit in a puddle and be fine. What happens at the seams, at the perimeter and underneath is a question about the installation, not the product, and it is the one worth asking.
Where each core makes sense
Rigid SPC cores are dense and dimensionally stable, which makes them the sensible choice over concrete slabs and in rooms that get hot in the afternoon and cool overnight. They are also the least forgiving of a wavy subfloor, because a rigid plank bridges a dip rather than following it, and a bridged dip becomes a hollow spot you can hear.
Softer cores feel warmer and quieter and hide minor subfloor variation better, at the cost of denting more easily under a heavy point load. On upper floors in older houses around Newark and Granville that trade is often the right one. On a basement slab it usually is not.

The rooms that defeat wood
Kitchens, entries and mudrooms
These are the rooms LVP was made for. Water arrives on a schedule — boots in February, a dishwasher that will eventually leak, a dog that drinks enthusiastically — and a wood floor in that position spends its life either being babied or being damaged.
The other advantage is continuity. Running the same plank from an entry through a kitchen and into a family room reads as one floor rather than three, which makes a modest house feel considerably larger than a floor that changes at every doorway.
Basements and slabs
Below grade is where LVP genuinely has no equal. Concrete gives off moisture for years and moves with the seasons, and solid wood over a slab is a slow-motion argument you lose. A rigid-core plank with the right underlayment handles it.
It still needs the same discipline: we check the slab for moisture, flatness and cracks before anything goes down. A slab that reads high on moisture is not a reason to abandon the plan, but it is a reason to change the underlayment, and that is a decision better made before the boxes are open.
Houses with pets and children
Claws, spills and toys are what LVP handles best. A thick wear layer resists the scratching that dulls a hardwood finish, and a spill on vinyl is a wipe rather than an event.
The realistic limit is denting rather than scratching. A heavy appliance dragged across a soft-core plank leaves a mark, so we talk through where the fridge lands and how the furniture moves before we specify the core.

A thin floor tells the truth about the subfloor
Flat first
Most LVP is between four and seven millimetres thick. It does not hide anything. Every dip, every ridge at a plywood joint, every high spot in a slab reads through it, sometimes visually and always underfoot.
So the preparation is the job. We check the subfloor for flatness against the manufacturer's tolerance, and we level, fill or grind where it misses. That is the step that gets skipped on a rushed install, and it is why some vinyl floors feel hollow in patches within the first year.
Acclimation and expansion
Vinyl moves with temperature more than with humidity, which catches people out — it is not wood, so nobody expects it to move at all. A floor laid tight to the walls in a cool house in February and then baked by afternoon sun in July has nowhere to go but up.
We let the material acclimate in the room, we leave the expansion gap the manufacturer specifies at every perimeter and every fixed object, and we cover the gap with trim rather than filler. It is invisible when it is done right and impossible to fix afterwards when it is not.
Transitions and the finish
Where the plank meets carpet, tile or a stair nosing is where a vinyl floor either looks finished or looks laid. We fit the transitions as part of the project, undercut door casings so the plank runs beneath them rather than being scribed around them, and set the trim to cover movement without pinning the floor down.
Existing-floor removal and standard furniture moving are included on most projects, we clean up, and we walk the finished job with you. Installed products carry a lifetime warranty.

Is luxury vinyl plank waterproof?
Water-resistant and waterproof constructions are both available. Which one suits your home depends on the room, the subfloor and how the space gets used — we go through that at the in-home appointment.
Can LVP go over my existing floor?
Sometimes. We inspect the subfloor and existing surface first and explain any leveling, repair or removal that is needed. Your new floor performs best over a clean, dry, stable base.
