Canal Winchester was established in 1828 by Reuben Dove and John Colman and named for the Ohio and Erie Canal that ran through it. It has grown fast — 9,107 residents at the 2020 census, up 28.2% on 2010, after a 71.1% rise the decade before. That gives a small historic core surrounded by a lot of recent building, and the two need entirely different flooring.

Canal Winchester takes its name from the Ohio and Erie Canal, and Reuben Dove named the Winchester part after his father's home town in Virginia. The post office adopted the full name in 1841 to separate it from five other Ohio Winchesters. It spans Fairfield and Franklin counties across about eight square miles.

The growth is the striking thing: 71.1% between 2000 and 2010, then a further 28.2% to reach 9,107 at the 2020 census. That has left a compact nineteenth-century core with two decades of subdivision wrapped around it, and the flooring job depends entirely on which of those you live in.

In the North High Street Historic District and the streets near it, the houses are old and behave like it. Plank subfloors, joists that have settled, floors out of level by enough that a rigid-core plank will bridge the dips and go hollow. Either the deck gets leveled properly or the product gets chosen to follow it. Original hardwood turns up under carpet regularly, and we will tell you when it is worth keeping rather than covering it quietly.

In the newer parts, the questions are flatness and slab moisture. Open-plan layouts mean one continuous run of plank across several rooms with no doorway to break it, and a long run shows every deviation in the deck. On the newer south and east edges where there is slab, we take a moisture reading before choosing anything, because concrete gives off moisture for years and a floor specified around an assumption is a floor specified badly.

The historic district also affects what looks right. In a house near the Bergstresser Bridge or the old downtown, a very wide heavily textured contemporary plank reads as an anachronism where something narrower and lower in sheen does not. That is your call, not ours, but it is worth raising before an order goes in.
