John Clark founded Gahanna in 1849 along Big Walnut Creek, and the city had 35,726 residents at the 2020 census. The Creekside redevelopment began in October 2004 and turned the area by the water into restaurants, residences and office space with a 389-space garage — which is why the oldest part of town now reads as the newest.

Most Gahanna houses, though, are suburban stock from the post-war decades onward: plywood decks on wood joists, conventional spans, and by now several generations of flooring stacked up. Where a house sits on made ground rather than undisturbed soil, movement in the slab or the footings is more likely, and a floor laid across a joint that is still moving will eventually show it.
